Capel trainer-reinsman Aiden De Campo produced smart four-year-old Floewriter in fine fettle for his first appearance for eight months, and he gave a superb exhibition in the sulky to drive him to a narrow victory in the 1730m Cowden The Insurance Brokers Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
He had been successful earlier in the night with Miss Hepburn and Magnificent Storm.
Floewriter, a well-supported $2.80 favourite, was unfavourably drawn at barrier six, but De Campo was able to skilfully angle him across to take the sit behind the early pacemaker Spring Line, the $3.90 second favourite.
However, when Aldo Cortopassi sent Vintage Blu ($18) to the front 580m after the start Floewriter was shuffled back to fifth place, three back on the pegs. A patient De Campo bided his time until he eased Floewriter into the clear 300m from home. Floewriter sustained a strong finishing burst to take a narrow lead in the final 45m from $4.60 chance Cloud Nine, who had taken the lead with 250m to travel. Floewriter won by a head from Cloud Nine, rating 1.57.5.
Floewriter, purchased for $30,000 at the 2020 APG Perth yearling sale and raced by a syndicate of 14 owners, has earned $157,504 from eleven wins and two seconds from 25 starts, with the highlight being his victory in the Sales Classic for two-year-old colts and geldings in February 2021.
Floewriter is by American stallion Sportswriter and is out of former smart pacer Maddy White, who was driven by De Campo at seven of her eleven career wins (for stakes of $110,824).
Maddy White also produced outstanding pacer Handsandwheels (102 starts for 29 wins, 33 placings and $707,393) and Rock Me Over (203 starts for 25 wins, 62 placings and $398,839).
