Four-year-old New Zealand-bred mare Mighthavtime broke through for a well-deserved win after a sequence of six placing when she unwound a powerful late sprint to score a runaway victory in the 2130m Vale Howard Angel Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
Mighthavtime, trained by Greg and Skye Bond, was the $3 second favourite who was driven with considerable patience and confidence by Deni Roberts.
Last-start winner and the $2.65 favourite Adda Spoilt Major set a solid pace after Illawong Mustang had led for a brief period soon after the start. Mighthavtime, from barrier three, raced in sixth position, one-out and two-back, before she finished fast to burst to the front 100m from the post and beat the fast-finishing Alta Queen by almost four lengths, rating 1.57.3.
“It all worked out perfectly for her,” said Roberts. “I tried not to get involved early as I wanted to save her for that one run. I didn’t have to pull the plugs and she deserved to win after being placed at her previous six starts when she didn’t have much luck.
“Early on, Mighthavtime was a bit silly and pulled in her races. But finally, we have got her sorted.”
Mighthavtime, who is by Betterthancheddar has earned $65,479 from six wins and 13 placings from 35 starts. A winner of four races in New Zealand, she has had 13 starts in WA for two wins and seven placings.
