Victorian-bred pacer Anotherbigman is generally considered an excellent frontrunner. But trainer Jocelyn Young’s decision to race the Art Major five-year-old with a sit paid dividends when he unleashed a sparkling late burst to get up and win the 1730m Countryman Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
Anotherbigman, who had finished third at four of his previous six starts, was a $20.40 chance from barrier four, and he enjoyed a perfect trip in sixth position in the one-wide line. Young sent him forward, three wide, with 250m to travel and he sprinted smartly to win by a neck from The Kraken ($11), with Regal Cheval ($7.50) a nose away in third place.
“Tonight, I decided the best option was to race with a sit,” said Young. Goodfellaz, the $1.40 favourite from barrier seven, raced wide early and then without cover before fading to finish seventh.
Anotherbigman, owned by Victorian Russell Maisner, was making only his fourth appearance at Gloucester Park, and he now has raced 41 times for eight wins, 16 places and $76,517 in stakes.
He has won at two of his 13 WA starts, after four wins from 26 Victorian starts and wins at Hobart and Launceston at his two Tasmanian appearances in March 2023.
Anotherbigman is the fourth foal out of Armbro Operative mare Aleppo Heiress, who also produced Fourbigmen, who has earned $261,700 from 15 wins and 19 placings from 60 starts. His victories
