Promising filly Highview Heidi, an impressive winner of the $35,000 Gold Bracelet at Gloucester Park on Friday night, will have a few days off before being prepared for the $30,000 Western Crown on June 14.
“She’s got toughness, and she made it a staying test tonight,” said Bunbury trainer Paul Strachan, who races the filly in partnership with his wife Simone.
Reinette, who worked hard in the breeze when an excellent second to Highview Heidi a week earlier, was the $1.70 favourite on Friday night, mainly because of her favourable barrier at No. 2, with Highview Heidi at barrier four, the second fancy at $2.25.
Trent Wheeler sent Reinette straight to the front and the filly whizzed through the opening 400m sections in 28.4sec. and 28.6sec., with Chris Voak happy to have Highview Heidi racing without cover.
Highview Heidi relished this arduous run, and she asserted her authority when she burst past a wilting Reinette to get to the front with 550m to travel. Highview Heidi went on to win by more than two lengths from $10 chance Diamondsareforever, who followed the winner for most of the 1730m trip. Reinette faded to finish fourth.
Highview Heidi rated 1.56.5 and improved her record to five starts for three wins and one second placing for earnings of $47,319.
“I was a bit worried about Reinette, who went super last week,” said Strachan. “But our filly worked sensationally during the week, and I was confident she would run a good race.
“She will now have a week in the paddock to freshen up before getting ready for the Western Crown. Highview Heidi is highly strung and keeps us on our toes. When I was leading her into the birdcage from the float park tonight she spun around and booted me in the leg with a hind leg. She’s forgiven now.”
