Promising filly Between Two Thorns has proved a thorny proposition for Capel trainer-reinsman Aiden De Campo for much of her brief career. But his patience and thoughtful preparation have been rewarded. Between Two Thorns was the $1.60 favourite for the $50,000 APG WA Gold Bullion final for three-year-old fillies at Gloucester Park on Friday night when she was on her best behaviour.
De Campo had few concerns when he dashed Between two Thorns straight to the front from barrier four, and the filly coasted to an impressive win, beating Jackie Daniels ($6) by just over a length, with $20 chance Imahero four lengths farther back in third place.
“It took a while, but we got there,” said a relieved De Campo. “She has given us a fair few headaches over the journey. About six weeks ago I was scratching my head. I wasn’t happy with her, trying to find the problem with her.
“It wasn’t the same problem we had the previous time with her. And we found a few little problems, and thankfully she has got over them and turned the corner. They were more mental and some sore muscles.
“She will now race in the feature events for fillies and the main target will be the WA Oaks at the end of the year.
“Tonight, I thought she would be a bit tougher than the rest of the field and I let her roll for the final 1200m which could take a bit of sting out of the others.”
