Promising four-year-old Caveman earned a start in the $25,000 BOTRA Cup next Friday night when he gave a strong frontrunning display to win the 2536m Perth Plasterboard Centre Pace at Gloucester Park on Sunday night.

The solidly-supported $1.40 favourite rated 1.58.8 in beating Alta Intrigue ($9.50) by two metres after Mark Reed had set his rivals a stern task by setting a solid pace.

Caveman is prepared by astute Henley Brook trainer Mike Reed for Jim and Wilma Giumelli, who purchased the son of Somebeachsomewhere for $47,500 at the 2018 APG Perth yearling sale. The stallion now has earned $89,292 from 11 wins and nine placings from 31 starts. He is the first foal out of Our Copper Art, who raced 39 times for three wins, 11 placings and $20,239.

Caveman’s likely rivals in the BOTRA Cup, a 2503m standing-start event, include Minstrel, Gambit, Awaitinginstructions, Triroyale Brigade and Alice Kay.
