Talented New Zealand-bred four-year-old Cyclone Charlotte impressed with a splendid performance to win the $30,000 Direct Trades Supply Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night, and she is sure to be a leading candidate for the upcoming rich feature events for mares.

Trainer Ray Williams, who watched the race on television while holidaying in Bali, produced Cyclone Charlotte in excellent condition for her first appearance for nine weeks. He will set her for the $50,000 Schrader Pace on October 20, the $100,000 Norms Daughter Classic on November 10 and the $150,000 Mares Classic on November 24.

Cyclone Charlotte, the $1.90 favourite, started from the inside of the back line and Dylan Egerton-Green wasted no time in easing her off the pegs and into the one-out, two-back position before sending her forward, three wide, approaching the bell.

Cyclone Charlotte then swept to the front with 550m to travel and won by a neck from the $4.60 second fancy Beyond The Sea, who finished strongly from the rear.

Cyclone Charlotte rated 1.55.6 over the 2130m. This was her fourth win in a row and improved her record to 19 starts for nine wins and nine placings for stakes of $115,785. She won once from two New Zealand starts before arriving in Western Australia.

Cyclone Charlotte is bred to be a star performer. She is by champion site Bettors Delight and is out of the Mach Three mare Cyclone Kate, who amassed $360,349 in stakes from 21 wins and 18 placings from 60 starts.

A delighted Egerton-Green declared the best was yet to come for Cyclone Charlotte. “She should improve on that run,” he said. “I was able to get off the pegs and into the clear early when the option came up.”

Kyle Harper, who drove Beyond The Sea for trainer Murray Lindau, said: “It was an excellent performance. Beyond The Sea is racing out of her skin. There was some jostling in the back straight in the last lap and we had to come from near last and switch wide.”
