Veteran pacer Deeorse, unplaced at his previous twelve starts, ended a losing sequence of 22 when he caused an upset in an action-packed SEFS The Asset Finance Specialists Handicap at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
Deeorse is prepared at Wanneroo by Debbie Padberg, who races the eight-year-old in partnership with her husband John and Don and Adele Simmons.
Mrs Padberg purchased Deeorse for $10,000 in April 2020 after he had 28 starts in New South Wales for four wins and ten placings. The son of American Ideal has been a handy performer in WA, with his 120 starts in the State producing five wins and 27 placings for earnings of $120,060.
“He is a beautiful horse who will have a lovely home when he retires,” said Mrs Padberg. Deeorse, a $45.40 tote outsider, was a $61 longshot on the fixed market. He was driven patiently by Chris Voak, who was happy to keep him on the pegs in seventh position while there was plenty of fireworks at the head of the field.
After a lap of the 2503m event Kyle Symington sent Chal Patch, the $1.28 favourite and sole backmarker off 20m, with a fast move from the rear in a concerted bid to seize the front from $7 chance Navy Street.
But $7.50 chance Otis, who had been checked and lost a couple of lengths after 300m, also dashed forward, forcing Chal Patch three wide. Chal Patch led by a neck 1050m from home but was unable to cross Otis, who had taken the lead just after a lap had been covered.
Otis led by a length with 350m to travel but he was unable to hold out Deeorse, who moved off the pegs 470m from home and sustained a spirited burst to get to the front in the closing stages and beat Otis by a neck.
“Deeorse needs to have things going his own way, racing on the fence,” said Mrs Padberg. “He got that run tonight, and the good horses got tired. If they hadn’t got tired, he wouldn’t have won.”
Deeorse’s win completed an excellent night for the Padberg stable, with State Of Heaven, a $13 chance, running home strongly to finish second to Ifeel Sikdarl in the www.gloucesterpark.com.au Pace.
