Punters who follow outstanding driver Deni Roberts cashed in handsomely at Gloucester Park on Friday night when rank outsider Getn Wiggy Withit thundered home from the rear to snatch a dramatic last-stride win in the 1730m @ThetrotsWA On Twitter Pace.
Getn Wiggy Withit, the $1.75 favourite three starts earlier when he set the pace and won over 2536m, was generally overlooked and started as a $58.90 tote outsider and at $81 on the fixed market.
Getn Wiggy Withit, trained by Michael Young, was driven only for the second time by Roberts, who restrained the New Zealand-bred gelding at the start. Rocknroll Sass ($8) flew out to lead from barrier five, leaving the $1.40 favourite Whos The Dad in the breeze.
With 450m to travel Getn Wiggy Withit was in ninth position when Roberts eased him off the pegs and sent him forward out three wide. Callmewhatuwant ($10) was seventh at the bell and he sustained a strong three-wide burst to hit the front 15 metres from the post. But Getyn Wiggy Withit flew home to win by a half-head, with Whos The Dad, who had taken the lead 220m from home, in third place.
Getyn Wiggy Withit, a winner at two of his eight starts in New Zealand, has raced 36 times in WA for eight wins and eight placings. His dam Bettorkeepthefaith managed one win from 12 starts. However, her dam Running On Faith was an outstanding performer, earning $326,890 from eight wins and 19 placings from 33 starts.
In 2007 Running On Faith won the Group 1 Northern Oaks at Alexandra Park, was second to One Dream in the New Zealand Oaks at Addington and then won the $200,000 Diamond at Ashburton, beating One Dream by a length.
