Star reinsman Ryan Warwick admires Glenledi Chief for his wonderful consistency but he says that the New Zealand-bred six-year-old makes life tough with his attitude of not doing his best.

Glenledi Chief, prepared by champion trainers Greg and Skye Bond, was the $2.60 second fancy from barrier No. 2 in the 2130m Parliamentarians Cup at Gloucester Park on Friday night when he enjoyed an ideal passage, one-out and one-back, before being switched three wide 300m from home and getting to the front in the final 20m and holding to beat the fast-finishing Typhoon Banner ($17) by a nose.

“Things worked out perfectly, but he still didn’t want to win,” said Warwick. “He gets to the front and gets his head in the air. You can feel him slow up noticeably. It’s not a good trait but he has won lots of races.

“He’s honest. When he doesn’t win, he runs second, third or fourth. That’s what you know you’re going to get from him. I wish he would be a lot more comfortable when he finds the front. He just makes it hard work.”

Glenledi Chief, who is by American sire Well Said, won three of his 22 New Zealand starts before arriving in WA where he has had 33 starts for the Bond stable for 14 wins and ten placings. His win on Friday night boosted his earnings to $212,15.

Warwick kept up the good work when he landed a double at Northam on Saturday night, scoring with the Bond-trained Cotton On and Ian Foley’s four-year-old mare Dame Valour.
