When Victorian owner Brendan James advertised the Captaintreacherous mare Let It Linga for sale as a brood mare in May this year, Michael Young, the trainer of the five-year-old, recommended her to renowned WA breeder Trevor Lindsay as a racing proposition.
Lindsay and his wife Colleen heeded the advice and purchased the mare for $22,000 with plans to breed from her after her racing days were over.
Let It Linga has proved a worthwhile investment, and her win in the Time Honoured Camel Time Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night took her record for her new owners to 15 starts for four wins, two seconds and stakes of $37,144.
Let It Linga was a $6.90 chance from barrier three and she was driven with typical skill by Maddison Brown, who was happy for the mare to work in the breeze while the $4.80 chance Five Bangles set a solid pace.
Brown sent Let It Linga to the front 230m from home and the mare won by just under a length from $5 chance Miss Lamarr, who was ninth at the bell before charging home with a sparkling five-wide burst. Dontbesillychilli ($15) also impressed in surging home from tenth with a lap to travel.
Let It Linga, a winner at four of her 17 Victorian starts and unplaced at two runs in New South Wales, has raced 26 times in WA for five wins and eight placings to take her career record to 45 starts for nine wins, 11 placings and stakes of $77,810.
“She is tough, not overly fast, but is strong,” said Young. The Lindsays plan to breed from her next year, with Trevor Lindsay saying: “She is a big, solid mare and a good type to breed from. She is very well bred and related to some very good horses.”
Let It Linga is the first foal out of the Bettors Delight mare Delightful Lana, whose half-brother Rock N Roll Doo boosted his record to 37 starts for 12 wins and nine placings for stakes of $437,375 when he finished strongly to win the Group 1 Len Smith Mile by a short half-head from the pacemaker Spirit Of St Louis at Menangle on Saturday night, rating 1.51.1 after a final quarter of 26.2sec.
Rock N Roll Doo’s other victories include the Group 2 Paleface Adios Stakes at Menangle in February 2022, and the Group 1 Victoria Cup at Melton last October. Delightful Lana’s full-sister Iolanta has earned $171,775 from seven wins and 16 placings from 31 starts.
