Champion reinsman Chris Lewis completed a treble at Gloucester Park on Friday night when he drove the strongly-built six-year-old mare Rumour Has It to an effortless victory in the 2130m Trotsynd Syndication Pace.
“She’s a tough cookie who thrives on racing,” said Lewis after Rumour Has It, the $1.70 favourite, had set a solid pace and romped to a three-length victory over arch rival Three Rumours ($3.30).
“She handled things easily and I didn’t need to pull the ear plugs. She will be ready to run in the $50,000 Laurie Kennedy Pace next Friday night.”
Rumour Has It’s battle against the speedy Steno and some other smart mares promises to be a highlight of the program.
Rumour Has It began from the No. 5 barrier on Friday night and she dashed past the early pacemaker Lady Jadore ($41) to take up the running after 300 metres and enjoying her frontrunning role with slick quarters of 29.6sec., 29sec., 27.9sec. and 28.2sec.
She rated a smart 1.54.9 rate and improved her record to 30 starts for 13 wins, eight placings and $163,627 for breeder, owner and trainer Debra Lewis.
Three Rumours raced wide early and then in the breeze before battling on to finish a well-beaten second, a neck in front of Lady Jadore.
Before Rumour Has It’s win Lewis had been successful with All Is Well and Our Maestoso.
